These red doors serve as a joyful welcome to me every time I walk in to volunteer at the Pregnancy Center East (PCE). Joyful because I know what goes on behind the door: we serve women.
This year, I had the opportunity to serve women about three times a month at PCE as a Client Advocate. Women facing crisis pregnancies, financial hardships in motherhood, sexually transmitted infections, as well as men who find themselves in difficult situations relating to fatherhood or sexual health, are welcomed with open arms into our center, where they can find free access to resources and mentorship along the way. Everything PCE offers is free to our clients.
As a Client Advocate at the pregnancy center, I feel the closest I ever have to one of the most important social issues in our world today–abortion. In speaking with my clients, I have seen the way abortion can destroy a mother and a father on a very personal level. I have come to understand and truly believe that abortion is never the best option, and it’s never the only option. My youngest brother is adopted, and I’ve become even more of an advocate for adoption because I’ve seen the way it builds a family. My life would not be the same without my littlest brother. I’m so thankful his mom chose life.

I’ve made wonderful friends and connections with other women and men who volunteer at PCE. I have been continually inspired by the support and love they offer clients who find themselves on the other side of our red door.
This year, spending close to 50 hours in total at the center, has left me with a greater appreciation for the opportunities I’ve been blessed with in life. To whom much is given, much is expected. My parents spoke these words to my siblings and I often as we grew up, and they continue to remind us to this day. We have all been given exceptional gifts and talents; these gifts are meant to be shared with the world. Coming to UC and pursuing degrees in Business Analytics and Accounting, I struggled to find a way to share some of my gifts. I am such a people person, and I desire to make an impact on the lives of those around me. I love to listen to stories; I love to share my faith; I love to meet new people; I love to love. I have found a way to do all of these things and so much more in my role as a Client Advocate at the Pregnancy Center East. For that, I am forever grateful.

I look forward to returning to campus and walking back through the red door to welcome whatever and whomever comes in after me.
