What is Gateway to University Honors?
First year students who are a part of the University Honors Program are required to take a one credit-hour course called Gateway to University Honors. The class focuses on the values of reflection and learning from experiences. The 350 freshmen in the Honors Program learn about the requirements that come with participation in the University Honors Program. They are given time to reflect on past experiences and create goals for the future. The University Honors Program provides students with the opportunity to grow outside of the classroom. They explore their strengths and are then able to improve upon qualities in themselves that could be seen as weaknesses.
Students are taught what it means to be a Global Citizen Scholar. Each student is required to complete 5 "Honors Experiences." These experiences must focus on one or more of the thematic areas that the program emphasizes–community engagement, creativity, global studies, leadership, and research.
An experience can be completed in a variety of ways, but students are expected to reflect during and after the experience. Reflections are posted in the student's Learning Portfolio.
Right now, you are looking at my Learning Portfolio. After I complete Honors Experiences, I upload my experience reflections to this site.
