Character Based Leadership
Summary: During the fall semester, I was enrolled in a course entitled Character Based Leadership. Throughout the course, local leaders from various professions and backgrounds came in as guest speakers to share with my class their leadership journeys. I participated in an overnight retreat to Camp Joy where I studied the five dysfunctions of a team and learned how I can counter these dysfunctions and bring greatness to all of the teams of which I am a member. My class and I participated in a variety of team-building activities and the facilitators led eye-opening conversations about what it means to be a leader.
I chose to showcase the following work because this paper served as a final exam. Each student presented his/her own metaphor for leadership in front of the class, and had to turn in a paper expounding on his/her thoughts during finals week. It was nice to not have a required final exam. More than that, though, writing this paper forced me to go back through all of the notes I had taken during our speaker sessions. I went through my memories and thought about their insights for a second time. I feel that it really solidified their points of view in my mind, and I was able to take something away from the class. In the future, I will continue to put all of their best leadership practices to use and become the best leader I can be.
